MY STORY
Sports were always a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Playing different sports for many years helped create my competitive nature and work ethic. When I started working out, the purpose was solely to get better at the sport I was playing which ultimately paid off. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play two sports at the Division 1 level in college. It sounds great to be able to play two sports at the Division 1 level, however, my mental health was unwell. At first, the only way I knew how to cope was to destroy my body physically by over training and exhaust myself every day. I learned the hard way that this only made things worse because my performance wasn't where it should be due to over training and exhaustion. Suddenly, I took a step that seemed so scary because of this stigma. I started going to therapy and taking medication.
This was the turning point in my life. I learned more about myself and how to cope with depression and anxiety. I learned to appreciate all of the positives I have. I learned how to be grateful for the life I have because there are people that would do anything to be in my position. I finally started to love myself for who I am and know how much I can give. Fitness has now become a part of my routine instead of it only supplementing my sport. I learned to take rest days and learned more about my body. I’ve tried many different styles of working out from bodybuilding to powerlifting and now Crossfit.
For the first time in my life not being on a team, I felt lost and did not have a drive to workout anymore. I lost all my motivation because having nothing to work towards and my mental health started to take a toll. Then I found CrossFit. Even though it is a battle between me and myself, the environment is similar to a team atmosphere. Everyone is pushing you and cheering you on while also competing against you every day. Since I started CrossFit, I now have confidence that I never thought was possible. I finally can say that I love myself. I found out that mental health and fitness complement each other and enhance each other. UPL;FT was created for this exact reason. As a way for people to have confidence and love themselves.
I encourage everyone to be active and challenge themselves mentally and physically to get better themselves in their daily lives. I want you to know that you are never alone. Always continue to push yourself as well as others around you.
Most importantly, KEEP MOVING FORWARD!
